Ownership and regulation

Turkish clubs traditionally operate as associations (dernek) with professional football departments. Several major clubs (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, Besiktas, Trabzonspor) are member-owned. Smaller clubs may operate as commercial entities. The TFF conducts licensing and financial sustainability checks.

No legal restrictions on foreign ownership. However, the largest clubs are member-owned and cannot be acquired. Smaller Super Lig and TFF First League clubs are open to foreign investment.

Governing body: Turkiye Futbol Federasyonu (TFF)

Tax and legal structure

Turkish corporation tax at 25%. The Turkish lira has experienced significant depreciation, creating both risk and opportunity. Player wages are often denominated in euros, which amplifies lira volatility.

Valuations

Super Lig (outside the big four): £5M-£50M. TFF First League: £1M-£10M.

Recent deals

Turkish clubs have attracted high-profile players and managers, funded partly by commercial revenue and partly by owner investment. Several Anatolian clubs have changed ownership in recent years.

Entry points

Anatolian Super Lig clubs and TFF First League clubs are accessible at £1M-£20M. Turkey's 85M population makes it the largest domestic football market in Europe outside the top five leagues.

Our view

Turkey is the biggest football market in Europe that most international investors overlook. The population is 85M, the passion for football is extreme, and matchday atmospheres are among the most intense anywhere. The problem is the lira. Currency depreciation has eroded club balance sheets, made player wages unpredictable (most contracts are in euros), and created a cycle of financial stress. Clubs outside Istanbul carry real financial risk. For investors who can manage currency exposure and are comfortable with the political environment, Anatolian clubs with large local fanbases offer genuine upside. But the lira is the single biggest risk factor in European football right now.
